Personal Statement - Having Trouble Getting Started?
Here is a simple plan
Introduction - Be enthusiastic, state clearly that you want to study this subject and in general terms why.
Paragraph 1 - Outline your school studies, focusing on what you enjoy most and what is most relevant to this course.
Paragraph 2 - Expand to include any school service, club membership, volunteering etc
Paragraph 3 - Explain what you do in the community that relates to this application.
Conclusion - Return to the point started in your introduction. Emphasise that you really want to do this course and explain more specifically why - possibly including your further ambitions.

Personal Statement
Here are some things to think about when you are writing your personal statement:
Avoid using lists – this is basically a personal essay
You must use topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph - so that it is clear what each paragraph is about.
Be clear about why you want to do this course?
Show that you already approach your work with commitment and motivation
Show enthusiasm for your current studies and show how they relate to your application
Demonstrate clear understanding of the subject you are applying for
Tell them about extra curricular activities that you enjoy (relate to application)
Work experience – what did you gain from it? – what skills did you gain?
Show that you are an all round achiever – demonstrate that you are capable of responsibility, teamwork, communication skills
Show how all your achievements will contribute to your chosen subject of study

Leaps Eligible? Check the criteria below

Jedburgh Grammar School is currently a LEAPS Group 2 School. This means that LEAPS support students who have the potential to achieve a minimum of 3 highers by the time they finish school and match one or more of the following LEAPS eligibility criteria:
LEAPS give lots of free advice online - including how to make the most of Higher Education Conferences. This is available to everyone - follow this link for the S6 Blog page which has loads of great advice.

- student who is first generation in family to apply to higher education or whose parents do not already have a degree. This includes students whose parents may have briefly participated in higher education but did not achieve a degree. (Please note that a student whose parent/guardian/carer has achieved any degree – irrespective of mode of study, type of institution, location of study – would not be LEAPS eligible under this criterion.)
- student from a low income background (for instance, where a student is entitled to EMA, free meals in school, or where the family is on income support).
- student who has spent time in care or being looked after.
- student who is a young carer - by this we mean a young person who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.
- student who lives in one of Scotland’s 20% most disadvantaged communities as defined by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD20). Please check your postcode here.
